    Thank you. Its interesting!! However I have a question. As you said we need to remove the 1st flower, so in order to have the 2nd leader are you mentioning that, we should let grow the sucker below the 2nd flowering cluster since the 1st is removed.

    I think I saw someone else mention this, but it's worth mentioning again. Eggplant can just be bitter, regardless of the love and care you give it. We italians have known the secret to combatting this for many generations... salt. I weep my eggplant before cooking it by slicing it and throwing coarse salt over it. I let it sit for 10 minutes until I see the brown, bitter juices "weeping" out of the eggplant, and then I rinse them well under cool water to remove the bitter juice. Bitterness is gone and now your eggplant is ready for whatever treatment you want to give it.

    Thank you so much for this helpful info! Three questions: How much space should we leave at the bottom when we're trimming off the lower branches? 2. What is your favorite mulch for tomato plants? Our cherry tomatoes are in planters with basil, calendula, nasturtiam, etc coming up around the tomato plant. 3. If we do not take off those initial flowers (I did not this year bc I think I overdid it last year), is that a big problem? Thank you so much. Warmly, a newbie gardener!

    After growing in 15 x 15 pots for years I have found if your your tomatoes get BER ----- it's a combination of the pot is too small and it's too hot outside ---- the tomato has become root bound and CAN NOT absorb enough water (especially/mostly) if the temps go [above about] 85 degrees.

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead 6 днів тому

      Good chance in that case the growing medium was lacking in nutrients (or just volume) to a pretty extreme degree. Also possible some pest was chopping them off to eat before you ever saw them.

    Loved this, great advice - glad to see you back lately! Particularly enjoyed the bit with the chickens going mental in the background while you were calmly discussing bed placement and planting strategy. 😆 In the future, I'd love to see some info on companion planting with flowers to deter pests. You see a lot of that for tomatoes/peppers/etc. but rarely for brassicas and salad greens, which in my experience seem to get the crap end of the stick when it comes to pests around my parts. Particularly brussels sprouts and cabbage moths... what a nightmare. Thanks again, keep it up!

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead 6 днів тому

      Man, tell you what, I have to go out there and give the chickens extra treats before I record now. Otherwise they know and will just scream at me the whole video =) I like the science of companion planting but there is just VASTLY more incorrect information out there and than real data. It's a tricky one to do without relying on bad info =( For your use case, I might start by looking at plants that can attract parasitoid wasps in your area. There's some truth to that I think!
